The new Substantive Companion, approximately 210 spiral bound pages, is co-authored by Julie A. Goren, the author of Litigation By The NumbersŪ - Fourth Edition, and Barb Pollinger, J.D., a paralegal instructor teaching at both Santa Ana College and Fullerton College in Orange County, California.  Their goal was to create a text specifically designed to be used in conjunction with Litigation By The NumbersŪ - Fourth Edition in paralegal schools, in both civil litigation and discovery courses, but which could also stand alone.  They wanted it to be affordable and "user-friendly," presenting the substantive information paralegals need to know in a clear, concise, and simple format. They have succeeded!

The Substantive Companion deals with subjects not covered at all in Litigation By The NumbersŪ - Fourth Edition (Business & Professions Code sections concerning paralegals, billing, interviewing the client, the court system, subject matter jurisdiction, personal jurisdiction, joinder, standing, and capacity, etc.), and also addresses in a more sophisticated (substantive) manner subjects which are dealt with in Litigation By The NumbersŪ - Fourth Edition from a purely procedural standpoint (deadlines, format, required forms).

For example, while Litigation By The NumbersŪ - Fourth Edition tells the reader about the parts of the complaint, sets forth the rules regarding format, and then describes how to prepare it for filing, the Substantive Companion delves into issues like:  where and when to file the complaint, who to sue, what to sue for, and how to draft causes of action.

Similarly, the Substantive Companion discusses personal jurisdiction and service of process from a Constitutional viewpoint, and explains how lack of personal jurisdiction or improper service of process may be fatal.  Litigation By The NumbersŪ - Fourth Edition describes the method of service allowed in California, gives the deadline for filing the Proof of Service of Summons, and how to do it.

The Substantive Companion does not have an Update Service.  The current rules, codes, deadlines, forms, etc., are contained in Litigation By The NumbersŪ - Fourth Edition, which is kept up-to-date!

The Substantive Companion sells for only $60.00 plus tax and shipping (but ships free with the purchase of Litigation By The NumbersŪ - Fourth Edition).  It is backed by our 100% money back guaranty, so try it out!
