Julie A. Goren, a Los Angeles attorney, wrote the first edition of Litigation By The Numbers® back in 1982, a few years after she had become a self-taught legal secretary. Having searched in vain for a book which would have taken the mystery out of California civil litigation and straightened out the steep learning curve, she decided to fill the need herself.
After self-publishing the first edition, Julie attended Loyola Law School, graduating with honors in 1987. She later held associate positions at the law firms of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and Buchalter, Nemer, Fields & Younger in Los Angeles.
Julie writes extensively on California civil litigation topics. Several of her articles have appeared in California legal publications, including: California Lawyer magazine, and newsletters of legal professional organizations such as San Francisco Docket Association, Orange County Paralegal Association, Sacramento Valley Paralegal Association, Redwood Empire Association of Paralegals, NALS of Orange County, Los Angeles Paralegal Association, Santa Barbara Paralegal Association, and many more. View Julie's articles here.
In addition to keeping track of California's twice yearly rule, form, and code changes to prepare updates for Litigation By The Numbers®-Fourth Edition every January and July, Julie does presentations (in person and via webinar) on various topics, including: California State court calendaring; how to keep track of California's rules, forms, and codes; the California Electronic Discovery Act; and annual summaries of rule, form, and code changes. She has presented for the Los Angeles Paralegal Association, Los Angeles Legal Secretaries Association, San Fernando Valley Legal Secretaries Association, Beverly Hills/Century City Legal Secretaries Association, NALS-Orange County, Orange County Paralegal Association, Redwood Empire Paralegal Association, Bay Area Legal Secretaries Forum, and more. Here's Julie's latest speaking schedule.
Julie created and teaches the California Procedures online course at U.C. Berkeley. One or both of her books, Litigation By The Numbers®-Fourth Edition and California Civil Litigation and Discovery, are required texts for several civil litigation courses throughout California, including: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, Cal State East Bay, Cal State Bakersfield, American River College, Fresno City College, Santa Ana College, Los Medanos College, Mt. San Antonio College, Mt. San Jacinto College, Santa Barbara/Ventura Colleges of Law, Santa Rosa Junior College, the annual Advanced Civil Litigation Course taught by the Orange County Association of Legal Administrators, and more.
Julie conducts in-house training for litigation secretaries in law firms. She is very involved in reviewing and commenting on Judicial Council revisions to rules and forms; many of her suggestions for changes, and her comments on proposed changes have been adopted by the Civil and Small Claims Advisory Committee.
