Litigation By The Numbers® (LBTN)

There’s a rule for everything in California State Court litigation. The ones you must follow to prepare and timely file and serve your document could be in the Code of Civil Procedure, the California Rules of Court, or, as is usually the case, both. There are mandatory state court forms for various procedures as well. In addition, each county has its own rules and local forms.

Litigation By The Numbers®, the California civil litigation practice guide (approximately 500 pages) relied on by legal practitioners and their entire staff, brings many of the state codes, rules, and forms, and the Los Angeles County rules and forms together in one place, explaining the procedures step-by-step. More importantly, it’s updated every January and July to keep up with the code, rule, and form changes. (See “LBTN Update Service” below)

LBTN Update Service

California and Los Angeles County revise their codes, rules, and forms every January and July. Because those changes often affect the accuracy of Litigation By The Numbers®, the author monitors upcoming revisions well in advance — and has frequently participated in the rule‑change process itself. [See Judicial Council Comment matrix here.] The necessary changes are incorporated into a revised version of LBTN every January and July and made available for purchase.

LBTN Update Service subscribers have access to each new version. We provide links to download:

The Update Service is invitation‑only. Invitations are automatically emailed to recent purchasers of Litigation By The Numbers® on a set schedule — typically around 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks after purchase. Once those invitations stop, no further reminders are sent. After that point, the only way to subscribe is to contact us. Eligibility to subscribe is time‑limited; if you contact us after you’ve missed too many updates, you may no longer be eligible to subscribe.

Subscriptions are initially set to renew automatically by credit card. If you prefer manual billing, simply subscribe and then email us to switch your renewal method. Subscribers receive renewal notices 20 days and 5 days before the renewal date, whether payment is automatic or manual. You may manage or cancel your subscription at any time through your online account.

California Civil Litigation and Discovery (CCLD)

California Civil Litigation and Discovery (“CCLD”) (approximately 220 pages) takes a substantive approach to litigation, e.g., what the pleadings should say (naming parties, jurisdiction, stating elements of causes of action), rather than what they look like and how they are filed and served; discovery strategies and drafting hints (scope of discovery, discovery plans, drafting written discovery, objections, and responses) rather than format, limits, and deadlines, etc. Updated as needed (when C.C.P. changes).
